A Day of Love and Hate

ree

I've been caught in a whirlwind of opposing emotions all day today and they weren't mine! From the love of friends to the hatred of a father and everything in between.

This morning, I have a friend who is going into surgery. He's pretty on edge, though he hides it well. He was clearly happy to see a card filled with signatures of people he know who love and care for him. His worry soon turned to delight, at least for a moment.

The love of friends lifts the spirit.

Mid-morning, I had a meeting with a good friend in charge of a non-profit. We started to discuss business when she broke down in tears. Her heart was torn between working so much and spending the rest of the week with her daughter who leaves for college in a few days. She's feeling the pull between those in need vs. those who need her attention most.

The love of a servant mother is bitter-sweet.

Early this afternoon, I met a brilliant young man of 27. He is successful in his work, handsome and unafraid to take risk. He made it clear that he doesn't like his father and hopes to never see his mother again. I encouraged him to do his best to make amends. He let me know that it's all their fault and that he's done with them. I sure hope he never makes mistakes with his own kids one day.

The hatred of a child's heart is a fortress of pain.

It's almost 8pm and I'm about to return a call to my son. He doesn't need anything, just a little chat with mom because she asked for a call this weekend. He will tell me what he has been reading, ideas he's got, new music he's trying to play, and a cool new guitar he's found. I'll hear him laugh and I'll do my best not to say too much so I can hear all about it. We will hang up and my heart will be full. He has no idea how good he is to me.

The love between a mother and a son, please tell me it lasts forever.

One never knows how the day will unfold. The highs and lows we all experience are what makes up life. Our Father never promised a smooth and gentle path and let’s face it strenuous path create better characters. Rock bottom builds better people.

We have a son whose estranged to us. It’s been years since we’ve spoke or seen one another. We still live in the same house, same phone numbers. Some people you have to leave to twirl in the wind until all their knots are either frayed or broken.

My daughter turns 32 next week and in looking at old photographs I wonder how it went by so quickly. Did she understand the sacrifices I made for th…
